Extreme birding.

Birdwatching 24/7. This is hardcore and very intense. We will do what it takes to get the birds. Sometimes the infrastructure may be lacking so we have to resort to very basic accomodation or camping. On these trips it is birdwatching all the time. Endemics and special birds are priority.  Birdphotography is not a priority on these trips. These trips are suitable for people who want to get massive lists and are prepared to work hard for it. HIkes may be involved., sometimes for several days,

Cusco day trip. Chonta Condors and Apurimac Endemics at Sorayapampa

Two new areas visited during a LONG day trip from Cusco, with best place to watch Vilcabamba Tapaculo, Apurimac Spinetail and Apurimac Brush-Finch, as well as a fairly strenuous 3.5km hike (and 3.5 km back of course) at 3400m for spectacular views of Andean Condor over the breath-taking Apurimac river.

Junin Grebe twitch

If you want to get the Junin Grebe but have little time and worry about altitude sickness, a fast way to do it is to start at midnight in Lima and go to Junin, see the Grebe and the Rail and then come back down to Lima again.

North Peru 2 with Orange-throated Tanager, Marvelous Spatuletail and Long-whiskered Owlet.

This North Peru program features a visit to areas where we have a chance of seeing Orange-throated Tanager and White-masked Antbird.

White-masked Antbird twitch at San Lorenzo

Recently the rare and little known White-masked Antbird was found at San Lorenzo. Accessible by light aircraft from Yurimaguas. There are also many other good birds here such as Black-necked Red-Cotinga and Black Bushbird

Scarlet-banded Barbet extension

Scarlet-banded Barbet was discovered in 1995 on an isolated peak in the Cordillera Azul in the head waters of Rio Cushabatay and was formally described to science in 2000. For many years the only way to see it was doing a 10 day expedition with a 2-3 grueling hike to reach the peak. Recently a new site has been discovered very near an extremely rough - but nonetheless - road allowing much easier access. This is still a rough trip with camping and extremely bumpy 4WD ride to get to the base, but the rewards are high with a number of other seldom seen birds in the same area.

North Peru 5: Purple-backed Sunbeam and Russet-bellied Spinetail extension.

Short, quite rough trip with lots of driving, to get the very rare Purple-backed Sunbeam and Russet-bellied Spinetail.

North Peru 1: Tumbes and pelagic

A great 4 day pre-trip to our main North Peru 2 program of 7 or 15 days that includes Amotape National Park, the Tumbes mangroves and a Pelagic from Los Organos.

MACHU PICCHU

Visiting Peru without visiting Machu Picchu is like going to Egypt and not seeing the pyramids. Combo: Machu Picchu combined with Manu Road or Tambopata. Stand-alone trip: (especially in rainy season) combined with a trip to the north. Peru has several itineraries that lend themselves to combinations of culture, archeology and gastronomy. Archeology and Birding Itineraries especially South: (classic Peru tour) Lima, Paracas, Nazca Lines, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Puno and Titicaca Lake, before ending in Cusco and Machu Picchu…whilst birding and enjoying nature. North: Moche, Chan Chan, Sipan & Chachapoyas cultures with excellent birding.

Machu Picchu and Quillabamba birding

The upper Urubamba area is opening up with a new road that connects to San Francisco and Ayacucho at cuts over Cordillera Vilcabamba at its lowest point. Birding here will be full of surprises. By combining with Machu Picchu going there and Abra Malaga on the way back it shall give a long list of species. It is a quite bad road at the upper Urubamba.

5-DAY TRIPS

We have noted that people have less and less time and problems to get away for a 2-3 week holiday and in the wired day and age simply can’t disconnect for such long periods of time. To solve this problem we have ns to a completely different part of the country if you are looking to boost the species list in as short time as possible. Currently the 5 day trips include Central Highway, Abra Patricia area (with Marvelous Spatuletail), Machu Picchu&Abra Malaga, Manu road, Amigos Research Center in the Amazon, Iquitos, Chaparri and Marañon Valley, Tumbes and Arequipa-Colca-Puno. From this – (9x5 = 45 days) - you realize that no matter how you bend it, Peru is not one time destination if you are a birder.

North Peru 1: Tumbes and pelagic

A great 4 day pre-trip to our main North Peru 2 program of 7 or 15 days that includes Amotape National Park, the Tumbes mangroves and a Pelagic from Los Organos.

WORLD BIRDING

Kolibri Expeditions is venturing outside of the Americas. Our first trip is to Japan in the winter, to offer a relatively inexpensive (Japan is not cheap) short trip over 7 days including Hokkaido with Steller’s Eagle, Blakiston’s Fish-Owl and Japanese Crane, Tokyo and the winter hot spring bathing macaws. Part of the idea of the inexpensive winter Japan trip is to keep the length short and to immerse with the Japanese Culture and staying at small Japanese guesthouses and hostels, which are less expensive than the hotels. Other plans for World birding on our agenda is a trip to Madagascar complete clean up and a three week safari in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Gunnar also has lots of experience in the Mediterranean area for birding and plant watching which we plan to include in our future programs.

Triunfo and Horned Guan

Triunfo hike with Horned Guan, Resplendent Quetzal and Tody Motmot is a birding classic that everyone needs to do once. One hikes from the Atlantic slope to the Pacific Slope in beautiful cloud forest.
