Combine your South America trip with a bit of Antarctica. Falkland Islands is a must for lovers of Southern Seabirds.
Ruddy-headed Goose and Black-throated Finch are easy here and other specialities include King, Rockhopper and Gentoo Penguins, Striated Caracara, Blackish Cinclodes and Cobb´s Wren. It may be possible to combine your Falkland trip with a sea crossing to South Georgia or when you are back in Punta Arenas, find a less expensive trip to Antarctica.
Day 1. Saturday pm. Arrive FI, travel to Stanley. An intro to the commoner FI species including Falkland Steamer-Dck, Ruddy-headed Gose, plus Magellanic and Gentoo penguins, Rufous-chested Dtterel, Black-throated Fnch etc.
Day 2. Sunday. All day on Kidney Island. Blackish Cinclodes and Cobb´s Wren, plus Rockhopper Pnguins (perhaps Macaroni Penguin), Imperial Shags, Grass Wren, sea lions, plus King Penguin if we can fit in Sparrow Cove.
Day 3-4. Monday. Fly to Sea Lion Island. An abundance of the ´usual´ FI species plus the first chance of Striated Caracara, three sps penguin, elephant seals, possible killer whales. Two nights stay on Sea Lion
Day 5-6. Wednesday. Fly to Saunder´s Island (or another of the islands in the west). More seabirds - the primary aim here being nesting Black-browed Albatross. A site with 4 species of Penguins.
Day 7. Friday. Fly back to Stanley and take Land Rover excursion to King Penguin colony at Volunteer Point if time allows.
Day 8. Saturday. Local birding/sightseeing. Depart.
