This is a trip for someone who has been to Bolivia on a standard tour concentrating on Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz or someone to plan to do these easily visited sites later. On this trip we concentrate on the more difficult ones that are often missed. The trip starts in Puno, Peru and ends in Arica, Chile.
Day 1. Puno-Sorata (Berlepsch's Canastero). After ticking off Titicaca Grebe and crossing the Bolivian border we continue towards Sorata - a Bolivian hiking Mekka. We shall try for the Canastero en route. Good hotel in Sorata
Day 2. Early morning try again for the Canastero. Return to La Paz for a midday flight to Riberalta.
Day 3-4. Birding around Riberalta for species like Masked Antpitta as the main target, but also the very rare Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant and good species like Johannis' and Spotted Tody-Tyrants, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Chestnut (Purus) Jacamar, White-browed Hawk, Leaden and Streaked Antwrens, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, Sulphur-bellied Tyrant-Manakin, Amazonian Royal Flycatcher, White-rumped
Tanager, White-bellied Parrot, Horned Sungem and Cock-tailed Tyrant.
Day 5. After some additional birding in the morning we shall be flying to La Paz, where our vehicle will be waiting for us to take us to Inquisivi.
Day 6. Inquisivi AM for Spinetail and drive back to La Paz.
Day 7. Drive La Paz- Lauca NP (Chile) - Putre. Possible to see Puna Rhea and Puna Tinamou en route. Other birds include Golden-spotted Ground-Dove, Puna Canastero, Puna Miner, Puna Yellow-Finch, Ornate Tinamou, Darwin?s Nothura and several others.
Day 8. Lauca National Park. White-throated Earthcreeper, Canyon Canastero, Diademed Sandpiper-Plover and three species of Flamingos.
Day 9. Arica. Full day searching for Chilean Woodstar and other Arica specialties. In the afternoon we shall look for Chilean Seaside Cinclodes on the coast.
You can continue to Tacna in Peru in PM for an evening flight to Lima or continue on our Arica-NW Argentina connection featuring Horned Coot and Rufous-backed Sierra-Finch.
