Most visitors to Peru will definitely remember this trip as a highlight to their stay in Peru. Not only for being the highest altitude, but because being such a dramatic difference to the metropolis of Lima only three hours away. It is another world:
Day 0. We will transfer to our country side hotel in Santa Eulalia. A light evening meal will be served.
Day 1. In the early morning we will drive up to bird the lower section of the road in the Santa Eulalia Valley. There are many west slope specialties here, such as Black-necked Flicker, Oasis Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheertail, Bronze-tailed Comet, Great Inca-Finch, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch, Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Streaked Tit-Spinetail and many others. We can arrange for horses to take us up to the very scenic rock formations at Marcahuasi. Canyon Canastero is particulary common in this area. Night in Hotel. Maybe you will enjoy the famous Peruvian dish Pachamanca in the evening at the hotel.
Day 2. In the early morning we will be at the look out to spot Condors flying out from their overnight cliffs. At the Polylepis forest we have been very successful with White-cheeked Cotinga in the past. Also present are Striated Earthcreeper,Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Streak-headed Antpitta and maybe we spot White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant found here twice. White-winged Cinclodes is usually present nearby.
On the way down we will look out for White-capped Dipper and Torrent Duck and pay an attentive eye for flocks of Mountain and Scarlet-fronted Parakeet in the afternoon.
Day 3. We will drive on the paved Central highway to the turnoff to Marcopomacocha at Casapalca for birding across the 4900m pass to the Milloc bog for birds like Giant Coot, Gray-breasted and Rufous-bellied Seed-snipes, Puna Snipe, Puna Tinamou and of coarse the targets Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, White-bellied Cinclodes, Olivaceous Thornbill, Black-breasted Hillstar, Dark-winged Miner, Junin Canastero, a handful of Ground-Tyrants and many more.
