Chiclayo-Tarapoto Birding Connection 4 days

 
 INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the trip is to offer a short compliment to those that either do our 9 day Tarapoto-Cajamarca birding trip or the Marvelous Spatuletail Display Photography Tour which starts and ends in Tarapoto.  Or a very short trip for someone who has visited Southern Peru and wants to get Marvelous Spatuletail and other teargets, You'll visit Posque Pomac, Quebrada Frejolillo, Abra Porculla, Jaen, ABra Patricia and Afluentes before the trip is over. Highlights include such as Peruvian Plantcutter, Rufous Flycatcher, White-winged Guan, two species of Crescentchest, Piura Chat-Tyrant, Long-whiskered Owlet etc

 THE TOUR

Day 0. Chiclayo

We meet up at Hotel Inti in Chiclayo.

Day 1. Birdwatching Bosque Pomac and Quebrada Frejolillo. Peruvian Plantcutter and White-winged Guan.

At Bosque Pomac we shall find a number of Tumbesian endemics such as the Peruvian Plantcutter and Rufous Flycatcher, as well as Collared Antshrike, White-tailed Jay, Black-faced Ibis (rare), Short-tailed Woodstar, Amazilia Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheertail, Oasis Hummingbird, Scarlet-backed and Golden-olive Woodpeckers, Necklaced Spinetail, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, Snowy-throated Kingbird (seasonal), Gray-and-White Tyrannulet, Plumbeous-backed Thrush and White-edged Oriole. As we pass through the reserve we shall look out for the uncommon Tumbes Swallow. On the way to Olmos we check out some roadside sites for Tumbes Tyrant and Tumbes Hummingbird. In the afternoon we will visit Quebrada Frejolillo for White-winged Guan. Other birds here include Scrub Nightjar, West-Peruvian Screech-Owl, Pale-browed Tinamou, Pacific Elaenia, Elegant Crescentchest, Guayaquil Woodpecker  and many more. Night in Olmos.

Day 2. AM Porculla  pass and on to Jaen.

We continue to Abra Porculla. Targets here include Chapman's Antshrike, Bay-crowned Brush-Finch, Elegant Crescentchest, Rufous-necked and Henna-hooded Foliagegleaners, Black-cowled Saltator, Porculla Hermit and the rare Piura Chat-Tyrant. In the afternoon and immediately start looking for Marañon Crescentchest, Marañon Slaty Antshrike, Chinchipe Spinetail, Ecuadorian and Blue Ground-Dove, Common Thornbird and others. Night at Hotel Pym's

Day 3. Birding Jaen and on to Abra Patricia.

En route to Pomacochas we shall look for Little Inca-Finch, Marañon Spinetail and Little Woodstar. We shall only do a fast stop at Huembo near Pomacochas at their feeders, as we will return there on any extension that pass across the area again. Nevertheless, it we shall look out for Marvelous Spatuletail, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Little Woodstar and many others.  We continue to Abra Patricia where we shall spend the night. At night we will try for the rare Long-whiskered Owlet. It involves a steep hike down  for a kilometer and the same distance back - but it hopefully shall be worth it. Night at Owlet Lodge,
 

Day 4. Birding Abra Patricia and Afluentes

Abra Patricia has recently got a habituated Undulated Anpitta. Other birds in the understory include Bay, Rusty-tinged and Rusty-breasted Antpittas and Rufous-vented Tapaculo. Then road then passes next to a series of low ridges cloaked in stunted forest. Here we look for Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Lulu's Tody-Tyrant, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Royal Sunangel, and Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant, whilst noisy flocks of White-capped Tanagers may fly overhead. Below is Afluentes which is good for mixed species flocks. There is a Cock of the Rock lek nearby. Umbrellabird, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Ecuadorian Piedtail and Napo Sabrewing among the hummers. Black-mandibled Toucan, Equatorial Graytail, Gray-mantled Wren, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Foothill and Ash-breasted Antwrens, the endemic Speckle-chested Piculet, Versicolored Barbet and a wide variety of tanagers including the scarce Vermilion Tanager can all be seen here. In the afternoon we continue to Tarapoto to spend the night or fly back to Lima.
