BIRDING IN NORTH AND CENTRAL PERU

18 AUG – 13 SEPT 1998

For some 15 years most of northern Peru was too dangerous for birding but with the demise of the Shining Path, it has now become feasible to visit this stronghold of rare endemic birds. I joined friends on a tour of northern Peru after fieldwork in Bolivia. The trip was organised completely and led for the first 2 weeks by Gunnar Engblom. It was very successful for sightings but gruelling logistically, partly due to poor road conditions. Highlights included an adult male Magnificent Spatuletail, Orange-throated Tanager, Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager, Great Spinetail, Royal Sunangel and all the Inca-Finches.

What follows are my notes and species list, as a full site report is promised in due course by other members of the party.

APPENDIX: NOTABLE RECORDS IN NORTHERN PERU

Puna Grebe, Podiceps taczanowskii

Although only a few were seen on Lake Junin, the local ranger reported a good breeding season thanks to higher water levels, with the total population estimated to be around 200.

Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Forpus xanthops

Not uncommon around Chagual, La Libertad but none recorded elewhere.

Royal Sunangel, Heliangelus regalis

5 males seen at Abra Patricia, San Martin/ Amazonas at c. 2100m

Marvellous Spatuletail, Loddigesia mirabilis

One male in full breeding plumage fed regularly on flowers behind the café at the traditional site near Pomacocha, Bongara.

Speckle-chested Piculet, Picumnus steindachnerI

A pair in open dry forest 39km north of Leimebamba, San Martin at c.1800m.

White-bellied Cinclodes, Cinclodes palliatus

Three at the traditional site on the Marcapomacocha road included 2 displaying vigorously but briefly to each other at close range.

Great Spinetail, Siptornopsis hypochondriacus

A pair observed and taped, with at least 3 others calling, by a gully at c2200m in xerophytic-type scrub above Chagual, La Libertad, 11km below Aricapampa on the western slope of the Maranon Valley. They spent some time in Acacia-type trees. Apparently, the first definite record for some 20 years.

[Russet-mantled Softtail, Phacellodomus berlepschi

A single funarid in a small flock near the pass at Abra Patricia at c.2300m was thought to be this species but identity not 100% certain.]

Black Bushbird, Neoctantes niger

A pair feeding alone together c12km south of Oracuzar, Amazonas at c500m. They were stripping the vertical stems from plants, sometimes in the head-downwards position, an action possibly facilitated by their upturned bills.

Peruvian Plantcutter, Phytotoma raimondii

While still relatively numerous at Rafan south of Chiclayo, this area, which is the only presently known site for the species, has been bought by an American sugar company for conversion to sugar cane!

Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Pipreola chlorolepidota

A pair c12km south of Oracuzar, Amazonas at c500m.

Piura Chat-Tyrant, Ochthoeca piurae

At least 5 at San Damian, Ancash.

Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Henicorhina leucoptera

Appeared to be common at Abra Patricia, at least in the range 2000-2300m.

Orange-throated Tanager, Wetmorethraupis sterrhopteron

A party of 4 was seen at c.450m c10km south of Oracuzar, Amazonas, feeding mainly in Cecropias and calling with loud "tsip" calls.

Rufous-backed Inca-Finch, Incaspiza personata

Two at c2200m in xerophytic-type scrub above Chagual, La Libertad on the western slope of the Maranon Valley represented a range extension. The commoner and more widely spread Buff-bridled Inca-Finch was also present.

Masked Saltator, Saltator cinctus

Two were observed well in a canopy / sub-canopy mixed feeding flock just below the start of the Paty Trail, Huanaco.
