We start at midnight from Miraflores and drive straight to Ondores to pick up our local guide Cesar Zevallos, who is also involved in a Kolibri Expeditions financed survey of the breeding success of the Junin Grebe. We should arrive just before 6 AM. We head on to Pari where the boat will be waiting. The trip to the lake center also gives great views of Silvery Grebe, Yellow-billed Pintail, Crested Duck, Yellow-billed Teal, Puna Teal, Chilean Flamingo and Andean Ruddy Duck. It shall take close to an hour to get to the part of the lake where the flightless Junin Grebe is usually located.
At mid-morning we return to Ondores to search for Junin Rail. Other birds we try to pick-up before returning to Lima are Dark-winged and Common Miner, Short-billed and Correndera Pipits, Black-breasted Hillstar and Andean Negrito. If time and weather permit we shall make selected stops on the way back to Lima perhaps White-bellied Cinclodes. Calculate to be back in Lima around 6 pm, but traffic has sometimes made us return as late as 9 pm..
