North of the airport in the suburb Ventanilla there is a fenced-in wetland with a visitor center and an observation tower. A nice selection of wetland birds can be seen here including Least Bittern, Andean Duck, Wren-like Rushbrd, Many-coloured Rush-Tyrant and Yellow-headed Blackbird. In season it is not unusal to see Hudsonian Godwit and Stilt Sandpiper. Closer to the coast is an other visitor center in the more meadow like habitat, where a trail recently has been put in which gives access to some of the ponds. Here are Peruvian Meadowlark and Grassland Yellow-Finch easily seen. We have seen the rarity Chilean Flamingo and Great Grebe here. At the beach is the usual selection of sea- and shorebirds like Inca Tern, Peruvian Boobies and gulls.
There are also some deserted grassland that is good for Peruvian Thickknee and many wintering swallows, such as Bank and Barn Swallows, and occasionally Cliff and Chestnut-collared Swallows.
