Arequipa half day birding Lago Salinas

If you come from sea level to Arequipa at 2300m this is usually not a problem. However, when you continue your trip to Colca passing 5000m altitude or to Puno spending much of a day over 4000 m, you may get into trouble. So it makes lots of sense to do two short altitude training half day tours getting exposure to altitude for a couple of hours and then return to safety in Arequipa.  The short trips are Chiguata Polylepis scrub where you reach aproximate 3800m and Lake Salinas at 4300m. Here we present birding at Lake Salinas. There is also a full day trip that combines Chiguata with Laguna Salinas, which is only recommended if you are accustomed to the altitude.

If the departure dates don't fit you, please suggest another date.

At Lake Salinas at 4300m the main targets are usually the three species of Flamingo species; Chilean, Andean and Puna Flamingos, however they are only there when there is water in the lake and this is not always the case. Water starts filling up in October-November and remains until May-June or so. But regardless, there are many other birds to look for such as Andean Goose, Yellow-billed Teal, Crested Duck, Puna Ibis, Andean Lapwing, Puna Plover, Andean Avocet, Puna Snipe, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, Andean Gull, Burrowing Owl, Common Miner, White-fronted, Ochre-naped and Puna Ground-Tyrants, Andean Negrito, Black-hooded Sierra-Finch and Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch. Rarer are Horned Coot and White-throated Sierra-Finch

The trip will be good as exposure to high altitude for a short while which will help fight altitude sickness when leaving for Colca or Puno.
