Extreme birding.
Birdwatching 24/7. This is hardcore and very intense. We will do what it takes to get the birds. Sometimes the infrastructure may be lacking so we have to resort to very basic accomodation or camping. On these trips it is birdwatching all the time. Endemics and special birds are priority. Birdphotography is not a priority on these trips. These trips are suitable for people who want to get massive lists and are prepared to work hard for it. HIkes may be involved., sometimes for several days,

Two new areas visited during a LONG day trip from Cusco, with best place to watch Vilcabamba Tapaculo, Apurimac Spinetail and Apurimac Brush-Finch, as well as a fairly strenuous 3.5km hike (and 3.5 km back of course) at 3400m for spectacular views of Andean Condor over the breath-taking Apurimac river. |

If you want to get the Junin Grebe but have little time and worry about altitude sickness, a fast way to do it is to start at midnight in Lima and go to Junin, see the Grebe and the Rail and then come back down to Lima again. |

Scarlet-banded Barbet was discovered in 1995 on an isolated peak in the Cordillera Azul in the headwaters of Rio Cushabatay and was formally described to science in 2000. For many years the only way to see it was doing a 10 day expedition with a 2-3 day grueling hike to reach the peak. Recently a new site has been discovered very near an extremely rough - but nonetheless - road allowing much easier access. This is still a rough trip with camping and extremely bumpy 4WD ride to get to the base, but the rewards are high with a number of other seldom seen birds in the same area. |

5-DAY TRIPS |
We have noted that people have less and less time and problems to get away for a 2-3 week holiday and in the wired day and age simply cant disconnect for such long periods of time. To solve this problem we have ns to a completely different part of the country if you are looking to boost the species list in as short time as possible. Currently the 5 day trips include Central Highway, Abra Patricia area (with Marvelous Spatuletail), Machu Picchu&Abra Malaga, Manu road, Amigos Research Center in the Amazon, Iquitos, Chaparri and Marañon Valley, Tumbes and Arequipa-Colca-Puno. From this (9x5 = 45 days) - you realize that no matter how you bend it, Peru is not one time destination if you are a birder.

WORLD BIRDING |
Kolibri Expeditions is venturing outside of the Americas. Our first trip is to Japan in the winter, to offer a relatively inexpensive (Japan is not cheap) short trip over 7 days including Hokkaido with Stellers Eagle, Blakistons Fish-Owl and Japanese Crane, Tokyo and the winter hot spring bathing macaws. Part of the idea of the inexpensive winter Japan trip is to keep the length short and to immerse with the Japanese Culture and staying at small Japanese guesthouses and hostels, which are less expensive than the hotels.
Other plans for World birding on our agenda is a trip to Madagascar complete clean up and a three week safari in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Gunnar also has lots of experience in the Mediterranean area for birding and plant watching which we plan to include in our future programs.
